2016 Year in Review
Hello, Friends! I hope you are enjoying the holidays and have eaten tons of amazing things over the past week! (We can all worry about our waistlines in the new year, right?) Anyway, for my 2016 year in review, I wanted to share some of the best posts from this year.

We’ve had so many amazing/crazy things happen this past year. This blog went from a two person business to a one woman show. Our family made a big decision to move from the city to the country. We finished remodeling one home and started work on another. Lucky for us, I have been able to document all of that right here on this blog. Here are a few of the top posts from this past year!
Most Popular Post
Spring Fling Home Tour – This post was the most viewed post from this past year. Spring is one of my favorite times of the year to decorate for. I love all of the fresh greenery and life that it brings to a home. And a lot of people also agreed!

Most Commented On Post
My Home Style Blog Hop: Neutral Modern Farmhouse Tree – We absolutely loved our Christmas tree this year. From the addition “snow” to several new ornaments, it was wonderful to have a light and bright tree to celebrate the season!

My Favorite Post
How We Sold Our Home In One Day – I have to admit that selling your home is one of the most stressful things a person can do. However, even though getting ready for showings and keeping your home spotless may have you wanting to poke your own eyes out, we were able to sell our home to the first buyer to walk through.

2016 has definitely been a crazy year! I can only imagine what this coming year has in store for us. Happy Holidays to you and yours! Please be safe and I will see you back here in 2017!

Create & Share Challenge: Holiday Wreath Display
The holidays are almost upon us! Can you believe how fast 2016 went? Me neither. For my last attempt at holiday decor (I’ve shared my Christmas tree and entryway decor) I wanted to share this holiday wreath display that is currently hanging in our dining area.
This post is brought to you by Elizabeth Joan Designs in collaboration with Cutting Edge Stencils. Although I did receive a product from Cutting Edge Stencils, all opinions are my own. Click here to view my full disclosure.
This month, I’m joining up for my second Create & Share Challenge, hosted by Casa Watkins and Pocketful of Posies! Thanks, Ladies! There are 9 other amazing projects, so make sure to check them out at the bottom of this post! (View my first Create & Share Challenge project.)
So wait… what is this challenge? Well, participants are tasked with using their personal decor style to create a project centering around one main item. And this month, we are working with holiday stencils from Cutting Edge Stencils! For this project, I made a fun and neutral holiday wreath display and it was so easy to create!

To make this holiday wreath display, you will need:
- Holiday Cheer Christmas Stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils
- Painter’s Tape
- 48″ X 26.5″ Plywood
- Trim Pieces cut to 26.5″ and 45″
- Wood Stain
- Old Rag
- Paint Brush
- 2 Paint Colors (I used Waverly Chalk Acrylic Paint in White and Silver Lining.)
- Small Paint Roller
- Screwdriver and Screws
- Hammer and Nails
To start, I used an old rag to apply Minwax stain (Early American) to the trim pieces.

While the trim pieces were drying, I painted one side of the plywood with white paint.

When the white paint was dry, it was time to stencil! I don’t think I’ve ever used a larger stencil like this before and I could not believe how simple the process was. I simply used painter’s tape to attach the stencil to the middle of my board and used a smaller paint roller to apply the gray paint. Once I was finished with one section, I carefully pulled up the stencil and repositioned it in a new spot with part of it overlaying a previously painted section.

Next, I assembled the trim pieces to make a frame. I used screws to attach the ends together. (Oops, I forgot to get a photo of that!)
Then, I laid the plywood on top of the frame and nailed around the back edges.

You can see below that the corners of the trim were not mitered. I just put the straight edges together with the shorter pieces on the outside.
Easy peasy!

If you want to hang your creation, you can attach sawtooth picture hangers or D-rings to the back. Didn’t this turn out lovely?

To finish, add your favorite wreath! I chose a pretty boxwood wreath and attached it with a ribbon and thumb tack at the top. This holiday wreath display is currently hanging in our dining area and we love how it looks! You may have noticed that the dining area is starting to look a bit different. (See the before photos in our Country House Tour.) We’ve been working on it bit by bit and I will have a full update of the entire space after the holidays!

One of my favorite things about this holiday wreath display is that is can be used well beyond the holiday season and into the new year!

The Country House: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
As you probably know by now, we’ve moved to the country! We love our new place, but as I mentioned in a previous post, our new house is not necessarily our dream home. There are aspects of it which are super great and others that are just so-so. No worries, though. We’ve got this handled. In true DIY fashion, we will make this place our own! So, let me share with you the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The Good Space – We have land, people! Like… acreage. That’s a big deal for us since we barely had any outdoor space when we lived in the city. We are so excited that our kids can play outside in our huge yard and the neighbors are fields away. (Not that they are bad. Our neighbors are great!) One of these days, we would eventually like to add a barn with some animals to our farm and maybe even a pond.
A tiny view of one side of our yard. The dirt in the back will eventually be grass.
Family – The biggest bonus to moving here, is that we are so close to family. I grew up just a few miles from this house, so my parents are close. Plus, this house once belonged to my great aunt and the land has actually been in the family for years! My great-grandparents moved here in the 1920’s when my grandpa and great aunt were kids. My dad and uncle celebrated holidays and played here when they were young. So did my sister and I! It is really cool that our kids will get to grow up here since there are so many amazing family memories.
My great grandparents, grandpa, and great aunt.
The Bad Replacements – Unfortunately, this house is not perfect. It looks like, over the next few years, we will probably need to fix/replace a few big ticket items, like the roof.
Square Footage – One hurdle we will be facing is space indoors. Although we have a great area outside, a couple of storage buildings and a two car garage, the interior of the house isn’t everything we’ve ever wanted. We have 3 bedrooms (technically, enough for all of us) a living room, dining area, kitchen, and laundry room. However, the biggest issue is that there is only one bathroom. Of course, it’s not the end of the world to only have one bathroom, but with 4 people in the fam and one of them being a pre-teen girl, I can only imagine that we will probably desire another one soon. We have yet to determine if we will be able to build on. If for some reason we can’t/don’t go that route, we would also consider building new. That is a story for the future, though. For now, we plan to stick it out.
Thank goodness for garages!
The Ugly Cosmetics – The country house is a cute little yellow ranch home and, on the outside, it doesn’t really need a lot of updating. Maybe a little power washing and landscaping, but other than that, nothing crazy. The inside is pretty decent too, and as far as updating, we will probably do some pretty simple and inexpensive stuff to make it our own. Lots of painting, some new flooring (the carpets are pretty old and ugly), appliances, lighting, etc. We don’t want to sink a lot of money into this house, especially since we don’t know what the future holds.

This week, we are on vacation, but I plan on sharing a “before” type home tour with you sometime after I get back!

Afternoon Chit Chat – No. 1
Hi Friends! How are you doing? I hope you all are well. Sometimes I feel like I get tunnel vision with this blog and will just pump out project type posts with tutorials. And honestly, I’m sure that can sometimes seem a little boring and impersonal. Since the beginning of 2016, I’ve really wanted to try to incorporate some more personal posts, but I have not really done much of that. So, this post is going to be a general update about life stuff, with a little touch of home sprinkled in. So, grab a cup of tea, coffee, or whatever you like to drink in the late afternoon (margaritas?) and let’s get chatting.

1. Seasonal Depression & Sickness
I don’t know about you, but I think that I’m slowly turning into one of those people that suffer from seasonal depression. (Clearly, this is self diagnosed.) I’ve been really down and think it is because of the shorter days and colder weather that ends up keeping me more home bound. It’s been hard to be motivated at times, especially on those days that I would rather just stay cozy in my warm bed. However, last week, the weather took to turn for the better and I feel like a new person. Well, except for some crappy post nasal drip that started shortly after it got warmer. Stupid allergies. Anyway, here’s hoping that spring is just what I need to get my motivation back!

2. St. Patrick’s Day Home Tour
Did you see my St. Patrick’s Day decor earlier this week? I joined in with a fun group of ladies and we all shared how we decorate our homes for the
leprechaunsholiday. Since I usually do not go over the top with holiday specific decor, I stuck with bringing in some greenery (real and faux) and adding a few lucky touches, like an Irish blessing on my chalkboard, an old horse shoe in the foyer, and a pretty green shamrock plant that my puppy decided to attack (see below.) Do you decorate for St. Patrick’s Day or just stick to gussying things up for bigger holidays?
3. The Curse of the Black Thumb
I may have mentioned this before, but I’m not very good at keeping plants alive. There are 2 in our home that have been around for more than a couple of months (The Fiddle Leaf Fig and a Pothos Plant) and I’ve figured out that their survival has nothing to do with me and everything to do with them not needing any sort of fickle care. In addition to my own struggles with plant life, I now have a couple of plant assailants living with me! Harper, our Golden Retriever pup, and Rowan, the sly white kitty, both enjoy attacking real plant life, as you can see in the photos below. The scariest part is that plants can be really dangerous for animals, but luckily we haven’t had any major issues with them ingesting the plants. They mostly liked to bat at them or just pull them apart and spit them out. Any suggestions for keeping them away from our greenery will be greatly appreciated!

4. Update on 366 Project
The 366 Project (where I attempt to take one photo everyday for a year) is going alright. I haven’t been able to keep it up 100% though. There was one day that I took a bunch of photos, but my camera did not record any of them onto the SD card, two days I didn’t post because I felt like poo, and one day where I completely forgot. Oops! But I’m trying to let go of my perfectionist tendencies and just allow myself to be OK with that. Which is soooo hard! My goal was to be able to record the journey of our family/lives this year, so I’m just going to keep on plugging away with it. Here are a few of my favorites from the past couple of months.

5. The Inside Scoop on Room Makeovers
We have a few big changes going on in a couple rooms of our house and I’m so excited to share them. Recently, we’ve completely made over our powder room and the kitchen also got some major updates that you won’t want to miss. Stayed tuned next week to see what we’ve done!

So, that’s what has been going on around here the past several weeks. What have you been up to? Any fun home/decor makeovers? Are you looking forward to spring too? Join the conversation in the comments below!
