Project Success: Painted Parquet Floors
I have been working on redoing the flooring in our soon to be playroom and my first attempt didn’t go quite like I had planned. You can read all about my failure here.
After the disaster of the white washed parquet floors, I decided that straight up painting it was going to be my best bet.
First, I got to work by sanding the entire space and wiping off the dust. I wanted to remove all of the previous finish. I was hoping that this would fix all of the discoloration problems I had before, but it seems like most of the yellowing was actually seeping up from the wood, not just from the polyurethane I applied.

(I figured since I was no longer worried about what the floor looked like, I could work on other projects in that room before finishing it for the second time. I’ll share more on those projects in later posts.)Next, a coat of primer was applied to the parquet. (You can see the yellow color bleeding through the primer on some of the tiles.)
Then, I mixed up my own paint color and applied two coats of it across the surface for good coverage. This took care of the seeping/bleeding issues. I sanded between each coat and loved how it was looking.
Finally, I added three coats of Minwax Water Based Polyurethane to give it a durable finish. This worked pretty good, except it left a different yellowish cast on the floor.

In some spots I thought it looked like what I imagine dried urine puddles would look like. I was able to sand it down a bit to get a more even look and the yellow was gone. If I were to do it all over again, (which I am not going to do) I would use Minwax polyacrylic instead of polyurethane. This would require me to maybe add a few more coats because the polyacrylic is not usually recommended for floors and this would make it last longer.
Yay! A floor I can finally live with! It was not exactly how I had planned it. But in the end, it was perfect!

May 2014 Printables
For the month of May, I was having a really hard time coming up with a printable in addition to the normal monthly calendars that we do. Not that I don’t have ideas, I just couldn’t settle on one to use. So, together with my sis, we decided that it would be a good idea to share the rest of the monthly calendars for the year. Not that sharing the calendars monthly was necessarily a problem, but we figured that maybe people could plan their lives out a little better when they can use the whole year
So where does that leave the future of our monthly printables since they always have included a calendar? Well, I still plan on designing fun and useful prints. But they may be a bit more randomized. Sometimes more than a month apart and sometimes coupled together.
Love these colors!

So Happy Together
This week has been sort of a reunion for Emily and I. Can you believe it has been has been 6 months since we last saw each other?! We’ve spent the week catching up and being goofy, like sisters typically do. If you follow us on Instagram (Erin’s Instagram / Emily’s Instagram,) you may have seen some of our shenanigans. Our 3 little boys have certainly kept us busy too…

We were sure to visit Target, you know, because of holiday clearance. Look at this mini haul!

Along with my youngest child, I also brought along our sweet old pup, Maverick. (Our other loving doggie, Piper, passed away last week, so we wanted to make sure Maverick wasn’t home alone all week while the hubby and daughter were at work/school.) Emily’s youngest has really enjoyed his time with his “new buddy.”

Maverick was also invited to come in and visit at the preschool by Emily’s oldest son for Pet Day. All of the little kids loved it. I think Emily’s family is going to need to get a pet of their own soon!

Emily has been attempting to teach me her motto “if it is free, take it.” Here you can see her picking out some treasures from someone’s trash pile. (Initially, I couldn’t bring myself to get out of the car. I’m a weenie like that.)

And to finish off this post, I thought I would leave you with an image of our only real DIY of the week. Gettin’ my hair did.

We All Scream, For Ice Cream!
“This shop is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and Wet-Nap, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #showusyourmess http://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV”
Here in upstate New York, everyone is eagerly awaiting the warm weather to arrive and stick around a bit. But, as usual, mother nature is taking her sweet old time. To show her that she can’t bring us down with her frigid windy weather and casual snow storms, I decided to have an ice cream party for
myselfmy boys.
I headed off to Walmart, you know, because of their every day low prices, to pick up some of the essentials for the party. While I was there, I decided to forgo the traditional napkins and picked up a canister of Wet-Nap. After all, this was a party for a 2 year old and 4 year old. Things were bound to get messy. (I used a $0.55 off coupon. You can get it here, while supplies last.)

As party time was approaching, my four year old kept reminding me “Mommy, it’s not just any party. It’s an ice cream party!” To say that he was excited would probably be an understatement.
I set up the ice cream bar, using a fun colorful bed sheet I had purchased at the thrift store for only $2 as my table cloth. It was the perfect thing to bring some bright cheeriness to our gathering.

I also made a few tissue paper flowers for more color. The back drop of my display was a chalkboard wall we have in our playroom. This made for inexpensive decorating.

Aqua washi tape was added to my neon green plastic spoons to jazz them up a bit. Super simple!

My little men had a blast with this party.

As predicted, things got pretty messy.

But nothing my two year old couldn’t clean up. The Wet-Nap made it a breeze!

So, take that mother nature! Finally, a win for us!
