    Frayed Heart Pillow

We don’t typically decorate for Valentine’s Day, besides the occasional window decal or heart garland for the kids. However, this year I decided to turn things up a notch and make an easy, neutral frayed heart pillow. Ok, I guess that is only 0.01 notches, but you get the picture.

    Frayed Heart Pillow

To make this pillow, you will need:

    – pillow form
    – fabric in two different colors (I used canvas drop cloth and white cotton fabric)
    – scissors
    – sewing machine
    – heart template
    – fabric pen
    – stitch witchery
    – iron

To start, I cut out my main pillow fabric pieces from drop cloth (left over from the re-upholstry of an old chair.) I made the pillow cover envelope style. You can find tons of tutorials for this online.

Next, I guesstimated how large I wanted my heart to be, free-handed a heart on a couple of pieces of cardstock, and cut it out to make a template.

    Heart Trace On Fabric

Placing the template on my white fabric, which was also extra from a project, I traced around the edges and snipped around it with some scissors.

Then, I centered the white heart on the front piece of my pillow case and attached it with some stitch witchery and my iron.

    Using Stitch Witchery Heart

After that, it was time to get sewing. I sewed around the outside of the heart, leaving a little edge to be frayed.

To finish up, I sewed the rest of the pillow case together, ran it through the washing machine, and inserted my pillow form once it was dry.

    Neutral Couch Sofa Pillows

What do you think? This was such a fun and simple way to add a little Valentine’s love to our home. The best part is that the pillow doesn’t have to go away once the holiday is over, since it is neutral and will work with our decor!

Vintage School Desk Gets Modern Makeover

    DIY Vintage Desk Upcycle

During one of my trash picking adventures last summer, I discovered this amazing vintage school desk sitting road side. I absolutely loved the shape of it and could not resist shoving it into my car to take home for a future project.

    DIY Desk Makeover

When I had time to work on this guy, I started by sanding down the entire surface. The miss-matched paint colors where just not doing it for me. The ultimate goal of this project was to give it some modern paint dipped legs, so I didn’t spend too much time removing all of the old paint off of the bottoms.

Next, the desk was stained with Minwax Special Walnut. Once it was dry, I started sectioning off the portions of the legs I wanted to paint with painter’s tape. I have always admired paint dipped furniture, but never attempted it before. So, I was pretty excited to see how this was going to end up.

Then, I brushed two coats of white paint onto the leg sections and in the desk cubby hole.

Finally, the desk received 3 coats of Minwax Polycrylic. This will protect the surface and also prevent the paint from chipping.

The original hardware I left untouched. I love the beautifully aged look it already possessed.

Tada! What do you think? I love the way this turned out!

For such a fun makeover, I am very sad to report that currently this guy doesn’t have a spot in our home. I was hoping to use him in my youngest son’s room, but that just didn’t work out space wise. Unfortunately, for now, he will be hanging out (looking good of course,) in my basement until further notice.
