New Laminate Wood Flooring

If you follow me over on Instagram, then you’ve probably already heard that while I was away the other weekend, my hubby installed new laminate wood flooring in our house. I was so excited to come home and see what he had done!

You may be wondering why we decided to redo the floors in the entire house. Especially, since I talked about trying to save money doing “Chapter 1” upgrades here at The Country House. You may also be puzzled if you remember that we added in peel and stick flooring in our daughter’s Tween Bedroom Makeover a few months ago.

It basically comes down to a couple of reasons.

1. The light beige carpet in our main living area was getting destroyed thanks to our sweet pup, Harper, and muddy shoes. (It wasn’t in perfect condition to start with.) As of right now, we only use our front door to go in and out of the house. Since this winter’s weather has been so crazy, certain areas outside are super muddy. I can only imagine it will get muddier this spring!

We knew that we didn’t want our carpet to always look dirty and figured non-carpeted floors would be easier keep clean.

2. Initially, we planned on installing peel and stick planks only in certain rooms and leaving the cream carpets alone. Once we knew we wanted new floors for the whole house, we started to question if we loved the flooring in our daughter’s room. It is not bad by any means. However, the color is a bit darker than we really wanted in a hallway and bathroom with no natural light.

So, after some deliberation…

We decided to go with the same flooring we had installed in The City House. (TrafficMASTER Lakeshore Pecan Laminate from The Home Depot.) We really loved the look of the wide planks and the color was just the neutral we wanted. Plus, it is one of the most inexpensive options they have, which made us feel a little bit better about replacing those peel and stick planks.

Right now, about half of the house is finished and it has already made a huge difference. We do have a couple of area rugs to add some coziness in the rooms, as well as absorb some noise.

My Roomba has also saved a lot of time sweeping, so we are mostly just giving things a quick mop if they get muddy.

We really love the new floors and so do our fur babies. This is the newest addition to our little growing farm.  His name is Tim Tom and he is a Holland Lop bunny. (We are thinking we would like to give him a new name, but have yet to figure out what that might be.)

2016 Year in Review

Hello, Friends!  I hope you are enjoying the holidays and have eaten tons of amazing things over the past week! (We can all worry about our waistlines in the new year, right?) Anyway, for my 2016 year in review, I wanted to share some of the best posts from this year.

2016 Year in Review

We’ve had so many amazing/crazy things happen this past year. This blog went from a two person business to a one woman show. Our family made a big decision to move from the city to the country. We finished remodeling one home and started work on another. Lucky for us, I have been able to document all of that right here on this blog. Here are a few of the top posts from this past year!

Spring Fling Home Tour – This post was the most viewed post from this past year. Spring is one of my favorite times of the year to decorate for.  I love all of the fresh greenery and life that it brings to a home. And a lot of people also agreed!

How We Sold Our Home In One Day – I have to admit that selling your home is one of the most stressful things a person can do. However, even though getting ready for showings and keeping your home spotless may have you wanting to poke your own eyes out, we were able to sell our home to the first buyer to walk through.

2016 has definitely been a crazy year! I can only imagine what this coming year has in store for us. Happy Holidays to you and yours! Please be safe and I will see you back here in 2017!

One Room Challenge Week Four: Bed, Blinds, and Beads

Can you believe that it is week four of the One Room Challenge?! That means that there are only two more weeks until we wrap this up. YIKES! We still have so much to do!

This week I’m sharing  the Bed, Blinds, and Beads, A.K.A. some bits and pieces of what we’ve been up to. You know, the things that we’ve finished and the stuff that has gone wrong. Oh yes. There is always something that goes wrong. Especially this late in the game. Without further ado…

The Bed (Headboard)

This is one of those items that we were so looking forward to getting! When I first spoke with my daughter about the things she would like to have in her room, her biggest request was a tufted headboard. So we scoured the internet looking for a piece that would fit her liking and also our budget. I found this headboard and we fell in love.

However, I was slow to pull the purchasing trigger and the headboard was sold out the next day. Everywhere.  A week passed and even though I looked every day, I could not find it in stock. We were so frustrated because there really wasn’t anything else that fit the bill like the wavy curves of this beauty.

Finally, through some sort of miracle, we found it online at Walmart and it was shipped to our home within a few days. Yay!

The Blinds

Because of the electric baseboard heaters in our daughter’s bedroom, we knew that we wouldn’t be able to use full-length curtains.  I absolutely love curtains and how they can easily soften a room, so I was a bit disappointed that they wouldn’t work in here. For now, we opted for white faux wood blinds.  They are plain and simple, but totally get the job done.

The Beads (Chandelier)

So pretty, but such a pain in the booty. We thought we would be able to quickly install this lovely chandelier from Ikea, especially since my hubby has replaced plenty of light fixtures before. We were wrong. It came with attached pieces that have been, ahem, interesting to attempt to remove. So, we are mulling over our options, since we don’t want this chandelier hanging almost down to the floor.

Barring any other major setbacks (oh, please let this lighting thing work out!) we are doing ok. Let’s check and see what is still on the to-do list.

  • Remove old carpet and replace flooring
  • Paint walls, trim, & doors
  • Replace old electrical plates, outlets, and switches
  • Add new lighting
  • Install window coverings
  • Create a workspace that can also double as clothes storage
  • Bring in color and textures with accessories
  • Organize craft & art supplies, books, toys, and clothing

We are currently working on an exciting building project that will knock your socks off.  I’ll be sharing that next week, so stayed tuned!

How To Prepare For A Showing/Open House

Last week, I shared How We Sold Our Home In One Day and I promised to also share How To Prepare For A Showing/Open House.  As a former real estate professional, I have a few ideas on what buyers like and also the things that can have them running for the door before they even get through the foyer.  Even though there are tons of infographics and lists out there on the internet, these are definitely things you want to focus on if you are trying to get ready for a showing.

How To Prepare For A Showing/Open House

Brighten

Buyers love a home with good lighting! (O.K., there may be some who enjoy the dungeon look, but they are few and far between.) Open up those curtains and blinds, clean the windows, add lamps if necessary and turn on all lighting. Adding mirrors to a room will also help reflect light and make the room appear more open.

Tidy up/Fluff

Pick up and put away anything that is out of place. Make the beds. Wipe down counter tops and appliances. Put out the good towels. Make sure that sinks/mirrors/toilets are sparkling clean. Close the toilet lids. Fluff pillows and add some pretty flowers in a vase. Vacuum/Sweep the floors. Take out the trash. Definitely, clean up any pet messes/areas.

Kitchens and bathrooms sell homes, so make them shine, like the sink from our powder room.

Adjust Temperature

Make sure the temperature of your home is set to a comfortable level for the season. If you are selling in the heat of summer, a buyer will appreciate walking into a home cooled with air conditioning, plus it will show that the mechanicals are working properly. The same applies to the winter with a furnace.

House Scents/Smells

Every home has its own scent. Some homes smell stronger than others, but no one wants their home to be stinky. When preparing for a showing, be careful not to use strong scents from room sprays and candles. These scents can lead buyers to believe you are trying to cover something up. Plus, many people are allergic to them. If you must use something, my advice is to keep it simple. Use natural scents, such as those of citrus, vanilla, basil, or cinnamon. And remember the best smelling home is a clean home.

I hope that these tips can help you if you are trying to sell your home. Keeping these things in mind will help you to better prepare for a showing/open house and hopefully get your home sold fast!
